Deviance, marginality and the Highland bandit in seventeenth-century Scotland

Eric Hobsbawm’s thesis of ‘social banditry’ has stimulated a great deal discussion about the nature bandit activity. This shed much light not just upon banditry as historical problem, but on its capacity to offer wider insights into social structures. article seeks contribute ongoing by bringing bear hitherto largely ignored Scottish evidence. Assessing origins and Highland in seventeenth-century ‘heyday’, contends that brigandage, this case, should be understood less structural issue more form individual marginality. From basis, suggests banditry, both Scotland generally, can ‘stress test’ society around it, helping delineate boundaries acceptability while also shedding way early modern societies handled accommodated problem deviance.
